Helly J. Hansen was a captain in the Norwegian merchant fleet. In 1877, he retired from sailing at the age of 37 and established an “oilskin cloth and canvas factory” in the fjord-front port town of Moss, Norway.
He started a small factory producing oilskins for professional use, and this was the origin of Helly Hansen, the clothing brand that is now trusted by sailors around the world. The first product was a sail canvas fire bucket soaked in linseed oil.
In the early 1900s, Helly Hansen was among the first to design camping and sailing gear to the ever-evolving product line and fashionable rainproof clothes for urban use.
In 1984, Helly Tech was launched. A waterproof and windproof, but also breathable material technology. More than 140 years later, Helly Hansen continues to bring new waterproof clothing to the market as waterproof technology evolves.
Together with Polygiene, Helly Hansen (Japan) is able to bring comfortable, high-quality leisurewear for everyday wear that stays fresh.
